Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a health profession (officially identified in Law 3/2018) based on an integrated and complementary approach to traditional medicine.

Through an osteopathic evaluation, it identifies the "somatic dysfunction", expression of the alteration of the state of health caused by stressful events external or internal to the body, such as traumas and/or pathologies. Usually they occur mainly on the skeletal muscle system with pain or reduced mobility. Osteopathy, through specific techniques, stimulates the restoration of physiological mobility at the level of the different systems (circulatory, respiratory, fascial, nervous, musculoskeletal) that through a synergistic and coordinated activity, regulate the normal functioning of the body.

The "somatic dysfunction", of exclusively osteopathic competence, has been codified in the tenth edition (ICD 10) of the International Classification of Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death of the World Health Organization (WHO - WHO), in Sector XIII (Diseases of the osteomuscular system and connective tissue) Code M99 (Biomechanical injuries not classified elsewhere). This represents a clear step towards integrating osteopathy into the global health system.

n the literature there are many scientific works that attest the effectiveness of osteopathy as an autonomous discipline, as it is characterized by its own clinical reasoning, of proven effectiveness, which allows to identify the osteopathic diagnosis and the planning of the best therapeutic plan based on five models of reference for osteopathic treatment. After defining the diagnosis, the therapeutic plan and the reference model for treatment, the osteopath also considers the internal (social and affective) and external (work, stress, etc.) factors of the patient, in line with the ICF, International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. What osteopathy treats?

Osteopathy, through the manipulative osteopathic treatment, is concerned with restoring functionality and health status lost due to a trauma or pathology that caused the onset of a somatic dysfunction. It is also shown to be effective in preventing and maintaining health. The effectiveness of osteopathic treatment emerges from clinical and scientific results, as demonstrated by the Lombalgia Guidelines. Its therapeutic value, as well as being witnessed by the patients themselves, is demonstrated by the evidence emerging from scientific research. The "American Osteopathic Association guidelines for osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) for patients with low back pain", published in the JAOA, demonstrate the effectiveness of osteopathic manipulative treatment in chronic non-specific low back pain. Those updated in 2016 show that osteopathic manipulative treatment (OPT) not only improves functional status in patients, significantly reducing chronic, acute and non-specific pain in chronic non-specific low back pain, but is also effective in pregnant and post-partum women.

Other symptomatic conditions in which TMO has good results of efficacy are gastroesophageal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome and coccygodynia (coccyx pain). Moreover, among the numerous studies conducted, scientific evidence has demonstrated the effectiveness of osteopathy in the treatment of:

episodic tension headache, showing a reduction in the average intensity of attacks and in the number of symptomatic drugs taken; dysphonia, with a reduction in peri-hilaryngeal muscle pain and a positive influence on vocal production conditions; dysmenorrhea: Research shows that a series of five osteopathic treatments over a period of three cycles could be useful for women suffering from primary dysmenorrhea; irritable bowel syndrome. Studies show favorable results for TMO in the management of irritable bowel syndrome compared to the standard of medical therapies and placebo interventions.

TMO also has excellent neonatal clinical results. Infants with positional plagiocephaly - a morphological deformation of the skull caused by delivery and incorrect positioning of the newborn - if treated within the first 3 months of life have a resolution of 100% in most cases. Good results are recorded on regurgitation, gastroesophageal reflux and in infant colic. In the strictly paediatric field, TMO can be helpful in the case of recurrent average otitis; in postural problems and/or those related to growth and motor development; in children with severe disabilities such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida; in respiratory diseases and in recurrent ENT (otorhinolaryngology) problems.
